medical administrative assistant online

The Administrative Assistant Field and it’s Changes?
Well, I’ve given up all hope getting any academia/teaching work with my M.A degree, and am now looking to more administrative assistant work.
I’m interested in the administrative field and am taking an online course. I’ve done office work, but it’s been years! What are some of the big changes of the administrative/office field. How much do you deal with technology/computers (types of software programs, etc). I’m just trying to see what skills I need updated.
Whether you work in medical, educational, or non-profit, it doesn’t matter. I want to apply to them all!
Thanks for your help!
I’ve been an administrative professional for 20+ years working mostly in the legal profession. I’ve now been virtual for 8 years – as a firm administrator for a law firm, a senior paralegal, a legal assistant and an administrative assistant for an Internet publisher… #1 piece of advice, have GREAT computer skills. Not passable, but truly amazing. I’m a certified trainer on Microsoft products and that’s what’s gotten me most of my jobs and promotions. Learn Word and Excel backwards and forwards and also be extremely proficient on PowerPoint and Outlook. Checkout Brainbench.com http://brainbench.com/xml/bb/individuals/individuals.xml for certification testing in a variety of fields.
And this seems obvious but oftentimes isn’t… make sure your written skills (grammar, punctuation, spelling) are top notch. I can’t tell you how many resumes I see with spelling and grammatical errors.

Your MA should work for you – find something you can specialize in.
Good luck!
